Having an updated kitchen just feels so good. Weather you are remodeling for you or to sell quickly, here are some things to consider if you are on a budget.
1. If your cabinets are in pretty good shape, consider removing one or two doors and have the majority of it routed out and glass inserted. Make sure it is done properly and the glass is secured. Some cabinets already have a recessed panels that can be removed. However be careful – you don’t want to ruin your cabinets. When finished properly, this adds a nice flair to the cabinets. (remember that what’s inside can now be seen so spruce the inside up too).
2. Most cabinets can be painted, make sure your cabinets are cleaned and slightly sanded. Using several coats (with plenty of time to dry in between) can give a really nice finish. Priming the cabinets is recommended. Use high gloss for easy cleaning in the future. Here’s a twist, you can use a different color on the bottom than on the top. Or the island a different color than the rest of the cabinets. Get creative.
3. Install bead board around the island. This really dresses up an island.
4. If your cabinets are a plain flat panel, consider installing trim on the outside to give that dimensional look – sort of like a picture frame.
5. How about just adding hardware? This can be the quickest way to dress up the cabinets.
6. If your cabinets are fine, update your countertops. This can be a quick change out. You may want granite and if this the only thing you are spending your money on, go big! (Get a new faucet and sink too).
7. Add a tile back splash and throw in some decorative accent pieces in there. You can go neutral or add some flair and “pop” by using accent colors.
8. Paint an accent wall and go bold. If you don’t like it – you can always repaint.
9. Update your lighting fixtures.
10. Install new curtain rods and get some new curtains.
11. Keep the cabinets and update your flooring. Make sure you don’t have too many combinations going on in the flooring area. You’re eye stops at each transition so the more flooring of the same type can actually make the area feel larger.
These just ideas to get you going. It’s amazing what you can do on a budget. Look through magazines, online, etc. to get some ideas of what appeals to you. Never-the-less, have fun with it! If you’re selling, you just might want to stay and have your next projet the bathroom.
